How cute! One tends to look past the less colorful females and concentrate on the more elaborately feathered males. Your photo shows that the female markings are pretty too...

I love the mallards and probably spend way too much time watching them on the pond, but I find them so interesting...

Martha is an interesting name for a young drake. I predict he will get in many squabbles on the pond before he fully matures.

The hens are a much more solid brown, and the young drakes have the "shadow" on the top of their head where the darker "skull cap" will be.

Love the detail in this - what a delightful photo. There is a mating pair I see everyday in the woods. Yesterday the male proudly showed her off just in front of me :)
